How To Get A Texas Tax License

How To Get A Texas Tax License
7/30/2009 12:00 AM

Our company is going to be a hunting based company, but we are going to sell hunting dog supplies.

1. At the federal level, you file for a Federal Tax ID, and a Federal Employee Identification Number. The first is your business social security number. The second is what tells the IRS that you are allowed to have employees, and that you do have them. Otherwise they will tax you on the money you payed in wages as normal.

2. Your State Tax ID does the same for your business at the state level. Then you file for your State Employer Tax ID Number. Without this number, you can't pay into witholding taxes, medicare or social security when paying your employees, which is not only illegal, but will get you sued. Finally you file for your Sellers Permit, which is actually an ID for sales and use tax. Unless you get it, you will face heavy fines.

3. In Texas, things operate differently. Instead of a business license you file a local Tax Appraisal ID form. In doing so you not only register your business as well as open your account, you also certify that your business as you have planned it is legal.

Our business is going to be based in Burton, Texas as of right now but we are soon going to be moving to Greenville, Texas and that will then be the home of our business. We will render our services to people who are looking to remove swine from their property while selling equipment to other "hog doggers" that are wanting to do the same line of work.

A Tax License in Texas is not as simple as filing for a single document. You will need a 2 Federal ID, 3 State ID, and since you are in Texas, a county level Tax ID unique to your state.

The basic concept behind all of these tax IDs is the same. When you file your tax return, the IRS and state recognize you based on your social security number. But when you start a business, they do not automatically recognize your businessess existance. First you need to file for the necessary IDs and permits.

03 - Since you are selling hunting parephenalia, here are the licenses and tax ids you are legally required to obtain before starting retail operations:

1. A business tax registration license

2. A DBA assumed business name

3. A federal tax id number also is required in most state for those that they get a seller's permit, and if you are a partnership or you want to use it instead of you social security number to open a bank account.

4. Also, note that forming an llc or incorporating eliminates the requirement of getting a dba. It is a good idea to form an llc to avoid personal liability from business transactions. Since you are dealing in taxable items, you will need

5. A seller's permit.

Let us give an example:

George opens a business selling presidential memorabilia. However, he fails to purchase the associated tax IDs. Tax season comes around, and George wants to file tax returns including the money he has made from his side business. But he can't. Without the ID numbers he could have filed for, the IRS simply won't recognize the existence of his business sales. Now if he's lucky, they will let him file his revenue anyway, but more likely, they will treat it as money gained under the table, and audit him. In doing so they will expose his lack of permits, and open him up to further fines, penalties and the like.

While the price of your order varies dependant on what you order, our prices are the lowest available today.
